Going into hiding is a well-known concept in the Dutch memory of World War II. Thus, very little research has been done on it, as if we already think we know how things were when people went into hiding. Although there are many individual stories and histories, no larger overview or study on hiding and the helping of people in hiding exists. In the digital age, interview and photo collections have grown considerably.

Was Anne Frank's family exceptional, or possibly even the norm? Dr. Hondius’ project involves knowledge from the intergenerational efforts of the survivors, their children, grandchildren, and friends. Using a large amount of this information, a database and a set of digitized Google maps were created. These maps offer the possibility to compare and contrast the different aspects of various hiding places that occurred in all of Europe during the Holocaust.
